Initially an early college assignment, my partner and I were tasked with creating a simplified map of Boston’s iconic Fenway neighborhood. The goal of this map was to provide two uniquely curated tours that would guide visitors through a relaxing day of activities and fun around the Fens. Inspired by the success of the tour map, a year later I decided to take that map and push it; creating a wayfinding system, a mall like information kiosk for the Fenway. This map includes every bar, restaurant, parking lot, shop, attraction or point of interest; it also serves an important second role: safety.

This desktop sized, collapsible model shows the elegant simplicity of the system. The top of “i” lights up, illuminating the map and making it easily recognizable at a distance. The other side of the kiosk serves as a blue light emergency system. Simply press the red button for a direct line to the police. Cameras and speakers inside the kiosk allow dispatchers to communicate with the caller and even announce public emergencies. This combined with the simple intuitive map of the area eases a visitor’s apprehensions and can greatly increase their confidence in exploring what the Fenway has to has to offer. Snap a pic of the QR code or grab the free guide from the plexi box to start an adventure.

Guided tour map

“There’s more to Boston culture than clam chowder and rooting for the Red Sox. With the help of this map, experience two uniquely curated journeys that will have you trekking all over the Fenway area. From scenic parks and beautiful museums, to bustling bars with the game on, witness the fun and excitement of Boston’s culture”

As the text on the back states there’s a lot of culture in and around Fenway. This guide provides visitors two full days of actives with a variety of options for every budget and interest, making planning a weekend trip to Boston easy.

The simplicity of this guide comes from the way its folded. Open it up once to take a quick look at the step-by-step walking instructions.

Flip down the inner flap to see a quick list of the locations on the tour. The lower flap provides additional details on each place: hours, price, address, and phone number. Flip that down once more to reveal a simplified map of the area along with a visual of the tour’s path.

A slit down the middle of the guide makes refolding it impossible to mess up. It also allows it be folded in half so that the users only need to look at the tour they are currently on. It can even be ripped in half then folded over once, making it the same size and thickness as a credit card. The whole guide fits on standard 11”x 17” paper.
